Install a desktop tool

How to download, install and verify WhisperKey, Lookout, Audio Engine, Vibe Builder or DIY Platform on Windows and Linux, and why Windows warns you.

Desktop tools · Updated

vibedout’s desktop tools are free, open source and run on your own machine. They all install the same way; here’s how, and what to expect.

Where to download

On the desktop tools page pick the one you want: each has its own download button. You can also install them straight from install.vibedout.app.

There are builds for Windows (10 version 1803 or later, 64-bit) and Linux (x86_64, with GNOME, KDE or any X11 or Wayland desktop). There’s nothing for macOS yet: we don’t publish something nobody has run.

Each new version is published on its tool’s page.

On Windows

Depending on the tool, there’s an installer (installs for your user only, with no administrator prompt) or a portable build (a bare executable you run from anywhere). Not every tool offers both.

The first time, Windows may show “Windows protected your PC”. That’s expected: the builds are unsigned. Click More info, then Run anyway. If you’d rather not take it on faith, verify the download first.

On Linux

Pick one of the two formats:

  • .deb, for Debian, Ubuntu, Mint and Pop!_OS. Install it from the terminal, using the real name of the file you downloaded:

    sudo apt install ./FileName.deb

  • AppImage, for any distribution, with nothing to install. Make it executable and open it:

    chmod +x FileName.AppImage
    ./FileName.AppImage

If it won’t open on a recent Ubuntu, libfuse2, which AppImages need, is usually missing: install it with sudo apt install libfuse2.

Verify your download

The builds are unsigned, because a code-signing certificate costs more per year than these tools will ever make. So we publish the SHA-256 of every file: it’s the only way to confirm you have exactly the file we published.

On each tool’s page, open “SHA-256 checksums” and compare:

  • Linux: sha256sum FileName
  • Windows (PowerShell): Get-FileHash FileName

If the numbers don’t match, don’t open it: download it again and, if it’s still different, write to us.

The Android app

On the install page, the Android APK is listed as “Vibeout NFC”. It’s the vibedout Link app for Android. How to install it and what it does are in the vibedout Link FAQ.
